Assignment 7.1

The creative media sector includes a wide range of industries,  and there are large numbers of people in those industries included films, television, publishing and so on. These industries all use words, sounds and images to communicate with mass audiences and require the creativity of people with ideas for content also the technical skills of staff that can operate the equipment/software to make the media products.  I will be focusing on Television and film sector and investigate a few of different types of companies.

Private ownership
ITV is one of the examples of private ownership and it was launched in 1955. It is the biggest commercial public service TV network in the UK, it was primarily funded by advertising and this also means it does not need to meet strict Securities and Exchange Commission filling requirements as public companies do.  ITV mainly focus on television and this makes it an example of horizontal integration because it expanded TV channels from ITV2 in 1998 to CITV in 2006.
It owned by ITV plc., the British media company that a merger by Granada plc. and Carlton Communications. The main source of income is advertising funds, because it’s the largest, lots companies cost money to get their advertisements to show on the TV.  There are 14 regional licenses and one national license to provide the breakfast service and some for specific programming services. There are fifteen franchises are in the hands of three companies because some of these companies have merged.
ITV shares 22% of audience. ITV channel holds the biggest group of audience, so the more advertisement shows ITV channel the more those companies pay.

Public Service media
The BBC is a public service broadcaster located in London, The government funded BBC, and the main sources of its income are everyone with a television pays for also known as TV license fee.  The BBC is vertical integrated which means that BBC receive all the profit.  As a public broadcaster, BBC is non-commercial and it does not sell products to public to make money, what they do is to entertain them.  BBC does a lot research to find out what the public want because and this ensures the 1st place of its share of audience.

Time/Schedule

I will start filming my documentary on 1st December during the lesson time but mostly i will be filming during my free at college and outside college.

Production diary

  • We started off by researching and analysing a series of different documentaries. We make a list of local issues that concerned us and gather information for each of it.
  • Annotate three interviews and developing interview skills. We've been looked at three clips of different interview skills and asked to write up an entry for it.
  • Come up with 3 topics for global, national and local changes, and get an idea of what those changes are and how other people make it succeed.
  • Researching topic and what happened in local community recently and came up with one final idea that we are going to do the documentary about. My ones are mobile phone addictions, teenage gangs and traffic issues in the area.
  • Choose one idea to be the final idea and develop it further by research and gather information, then I created my research folder where I put my research result and my questionnaire in. I decided to go with mobile addiction and I started to research online. I also this topic could be quite hard to deal with because it's not look like a local issue as soon I saw the results on Google. It's kind of a global issue and I realised that the whole narrative could be too hard for me to complete.
  • Preproduction- Schedule and clarify the deadline of filming and editing. We have to write up our schedule as some of us are ready to film so we need to sort out the timetable for renting school cameras. I decided that I will use my own camera so my time will not be as restrained as others.
  • Started filming
  • Editing and finalising
  • Evaluating. I write evaluation to assess my own performance of this assignment in all aspects.
  • Getting feedbacks for peers and tutor. We watch all the documentaries in class and listen and give feedback to each other.

Documentary Evaluation

Evaluation

My documentary was based on the addiction of smartphones and there was mainly interview and also factual informations within my documentary. I think my management of project is not as good as I expected because there were too much going on when i tried to find time for film and lack of interviewee that has willingness to be interviewed by this topic. I think this is a  quite sensitive topic to discuss about to teenagers. So I  chose to be interviewed by myself because my own experience of addiction to mobiles I think I can express my own view about this problem.

I think the strength of my documentary is that I have clearly explained my point and make it understandable for my audience and I've added humour element to my documentary which was my cat jumped into the frame. I think the weakness of my film is that there could be more people involved and talk about the topic and also more factual information should be given to audience. I think i could improve it by add more element to make more like a documentary and possibly change the portrait frame to landscape or wider but the reason that I use mobile to film it was because it could be linked to my topic.

Audience feedback
We watched each other's documentaries in class and we are going to give each other some feedback based on the film. The first feedback I got was that I could interview some other people as well so it's not always me in the film.  Also my voice could be louder and more confident.
