Assignment 7.1

The creative media sector includes a wide range of industries,  and there are large numbers of people in those industries included films, television, publishing and so on. These industries all use words, sounds and images to communicate with mass audiences and require the creativity of people with ideas for content also the technical skills of staff that can operate the equipment/software to make the media products.  I will be focusing on Television and film sector and investigate a few of different types of companies.

Private ownership
ITV is one of the examples of private ownership and it was launched in 1955. It is the biggest commercial public service TV network in the UK, it was primarily funded by advertising and this also means it does not need to meet strict Securities and Exchange Commission filling requirements as public companies do.  ITV mainly focus on television and this makes it an example of horizontal integration because it expanded TV channels from ITV2 in 1998 to CITV in 2006.
It owned by ITV plc., the British media company that a merger by Granada plc. and Carlton Communications. The main source of income is advertising funds, because it’s the largest, lots companies cost money to get their advertisements to show on the TV.  There are 14 regional licenses and one national license to provide the breakfast service and some for specific programming services. There are fifteen franchises are in the hands of three companies because some of these companies have merged.
ITV shares 22% of audience. ITV channel holds the biggest group of audience, so the more advertisement shows ITV channel the more those companies pay.

Public Service media
The BBC is a public service broadcaster located in London, The government funded BBC, and the main sources of its income are everyone with a television pays for also known as TV license fee.  The BBC is vertical integrated which means that BBC receive all the profit.  As a public broadcaster, BBC is non-commercial and it does not sell products to public to make money, what they do is to entertain them.  BBC does a lot research to find out what the public want because and this ensures the 1st place of its share of audience.
